Heaters & Components

Sauna Heaters Sauna heaters are the heart of any traditional or hybrid sauna, and they're where the most consequential decisions get made. I own a Harvia KIP 6kW with a 20kg olivine stone load — a solid mid-range electric heater that's been reliable and well-documented by the Finnish sauna community. Key variables when choosing a heater: output in kilowatts (sized to the cubic volume of your sauna — the standard formula is roughly 1 kW per 45 cubic feet of insulated space, with adjustments for window area and ceiling height above 7 feet), stone capacity (more stones means more thermal mass and better löyly), control type (integrated digital controls versus separate wall controller), and whether you want integrated steam or a pure dry heat design. The main brands in the residential electric heater market are Harvia (Finnish, widest availability and parts network in North America), Huum (Estonian, design-forward), Saunum (Estonian, with their distinctive AirSolo humidity regulation), Finlandia, Tylo, and IKI for premium builds. Wood-fired stoves are a separate category covered in the Wood-Fired section. The guides here cover heater selection by output, brand, and installation type. Sauna Stones Sauna stones are not interchangeable. The mineral composition of the stone affects how it absorbs and releases heat, how it handles repeated thermal cycling, and how long it lasts before needing replacement. My Harvia KIP is loaded with olivine (dunite) stones — the standard recommendation from Harvia and most Finnish sauna manufacturers. Olivine handles thermal shock well and produces clean steam. Peridotite is a close alternative with similar properties. Volcanic basalt is often sold as a sauna stone but fractures faster under repeated heating and cooling. The stones you want to avoid are anything porous or with high iron content, which can crack and produce unpleasant smells. Replacement interval depends on use frequency — most sources recommend inspecting stones annually and replacing cracked or crumbling ones, with a full replacement every 3–5 years for regular users. Stone weight matters too: your heater specifies a minimum and maximum load, and under-loading results in poor löyly quality. The guides here cover sauna stone selection, maintenance, and replacement by heater type and use pattern. Components & Materials The quality of a sauna session depends as much on the components around the heater as on the heater itself. Sauna doors — glass versus wood, proper seals to hold heat without trapping steam — are one of the most visually distinctive elements and one of the most technically demanding to get right. Ventilation is critical in traditional saunas: proper airflow prevents carbon dioxide buildup and regulates humidity, but a badly placed vent can drain heat faster than the heater can replace it. Lighting has a real effect on the experience — harsh overhead LEDs are jarring in a sauna environment; warm low-voltage lighting set into the bench or wall feels right. Thermometers and hygrometers (I use a ThermoSauna combo unit) let you actually know what conditions you're in rather than guessing. Interior finishing — the trim around doors and vents, the bench supports, the backrest — all affect the long-term durability and the tactile quality of the space. The guides here cover the main sauna components — doors, vents, controls, lighting, and measurement — with attention to the specifications that actually matter versus the ones that look good in photos. Wood & Materials Wood choice matters in a sauna. The benches, walls, and ceiling are in contact with high heat and humidity repeatedly, and the wrong wood species will warp, crack, check, or off-gas resins unpleasantly. The Finnish standard for bench and interior wood is kiln-dried softwoods with low resin content: Nordic spruce, Canadian Western Red Cedar, and abachi (a West African hardwood with very low thermal conductivity, so it doesn't get hot to the touch) are the main options in North American residential builds. Cedar is aromatic and rot-resistant; hemlock is less fragrant and cheaper; thermowood is thermally modified pine or spruce that has improved durability and a darker finish. Vapor barrier material — typically foil-faced kraft paper or polyethylene — is essential between the sauna wall and the building structure to prevent moisture migration. The floor is usually tiled or treated concrete in residential builds; untreated wood floors rot. The guides here cover wood species selection, vapor barrier installation, and the material choices that affect sauna longevity and experience quality.
