Traditional Saunas
Wood-Fired Saunas
Wood-fired sauna is the original form — a wood stove (kiuas) in an outdoor cabin, loading birch or softwood, waiting 45–90 minutes for the stones to reach temperature, then throwing water and letting the steam do its work. The experience has a quality that electric sauna can't fully replicate: the heat builds differently, the smell of wood smoke is part of it, and there's a ritual to the preparation that slows everything down. My parents' Almost Heaven runs on electric, but I've used wood-fired saunas in Minnesota and in Finland, and the difference is real. The main wood sauna stove brands for home use are Harvia (Finnish, the most widely distributed globally), Huum (Estonian, design-focused), Narvi (Finnish, higher-end), and IKI (Finnish, premium). Installation requirements are significant: outdoor placement is strongly recommended, you need proper clearances from combustible materials, a chimney or flue, and a combustion air supply. Local fire codes apply. The guides here cover wood-fired stoves by brand, output, and installation type, with honest attention to the installation complexity that manufacturers sometimes understate.
